Sheldon: Don’t copy that floppy

More attacks from the Coalition about the copying tendencies of Rudd. And then Rudd hit back saying that he’s offering a plan for the future unlike Howard. The honest truth is that both the Labor Party and the Liberal Party are Centre-Right parties these days so fundamentally there isn’t alot of difference between the two. Leadership is probably the key element in political parties these days whereas in the past, especially in the Labor Party, the party had more influence on the goals, aims and policy of the party. Some say this has meant that political parties are now more focused on winning elections than on sticking to their basic principles. There is probably a element of thatoccurring in this campaign, whether it’s a good thing or not is up for debate.

Oh in reference to Rudd better controlling his candidates in Brad’s post I just have to mention that Maxine McKew has to be banned from dancing at any public events ever again. That was just shocking. I don’t quite understand why political candidates are forced to embarrass themselves for votes. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t see why anyone would be more likely to vote for someone because they help make food with the common man or purchase a rail ticket or wander around in a stack hat. It doesn’t really show that they’re an average person because it only happens in an election campaign. The whole thing just seems a little sad. I’d prefer if they showing competence in policy rather than being able to do basic tasks.

This reminds of something I read about Howard on a walk-and-talk in Melbourne. It’s something I thought I would never read ever. It’s from an article in the Age:

Another woman later scored a first for this campaign, telling Howard she was so excited about meeting him she’d forgotten to wear underwear.

Well yes…. Howard’s reaction would have been interesting in any case.

I agree with Brad in that we should cover our electorates more than we have been. I was just thinking of releasing the ratio of candidates signs in people’s front yards on my next walk home from the bus stop. Very scientific indicator of support I reckon. I mean the walk is at least 15 minutes and it’s a main road. Can’t get much better than that.

Kevin07, Labor’s propaganda website, is more popular than Howard’s official website according to figures released from Hitwise. I really don’t care about this story particularly but I thought it was a good excuse to talk about Brad signing me up for the Kevin07 mailing list and since this was in the early days of the list, you didn’t need to confirm your email address before they start sending you Labor Party information all the time. Brad now has a new tactic of forwarding Kevin07 emails to me with unrelated subject headings to tempt me to read it.

Just for your information Brad, it hasn’t been working. I’m not as interested in increasing my penis size as you seem to be.

Newspoll has released a survey that Howard is fighting back in key marginal seats in NSW and Victoria, while Rudd is polling well in Queensland and South Australia. Survey suggests that the Coalition will lose between 8 and 22 seats. I would recommend having a read through of the article, some interesting polling there. It seems things are closer in the marginal seats than they would seem in national polling.

BRAD: WE’LL CHANGE IT ALL

I will spare you hearing the Labor spin on this event, Peter Garrett’s second gaffe of the week. Seening as it has been repeated so often in the media.

I’ll admit it, one of the most annoying traits about the Labor Party is their constant reliance on cliches, catch phrases and company lines. It’s starting to bother me so I can only imagine the agony it is causing some citizens.

I do believe that there is nothing to this comment, of course there isn’t. The Labor party doesn’t have any clandestine plans to renege on all their promises. That is insanity, once Labor gets into government, that is only half the battle. They then need to live up to all the hope the majority of the voters will hopefully invest in them. And as if the Labor party would after being shut out of government for 11 years with sprinklings of utterly humiliating election defeats blow it all away as soon as they get into office.

But what this does do is hand deliver a sizable cache of ammunition to the Coalition, so we can hear Peter Costello incessantly squark on about it.

I agree with Sheldon, Labor need a new policy with their candidates, it should be called “Sit down and S T F U.”

I am getting strong images of the South Park episode “Timmy! 2000″ which is about A.D.D and introduces a revolutionary new way to deal with A.D.D without the use of ritalin.

It goes something like this….

(Video on non-medication treatment for rogue shadow ministers and candidates.)

Kevin Rudd: (on video) Hello, my name is Kevin, I’m from Queensland and I’m here to help by telling you about my exciting new drug-free treatment for foolish, militant, stupid, complacent, rambling or bungling members of the Labor party, or trade unions..

(Several hyper and rambling Shadow Minsters, trade union officials and candidates)

Kevin Rudd: This treatment is fast and effective and it doesn’t use harmful drugs. Watch closely as I apply treatment to the first shadow minister.”

(!SMACK! RUDD PUNCHES BUNGLING SHADOW MINISTER IN THE FACE.)

Kevin Rudd: SIT DOWN AND SHUT THE #### UP UNTIL THE ELECTION IS OVER! Kevin Rudd: If you would like more information on my bold new treatments, please send away for this free brochure entitled: ‘You can either shut the #### up until the election is over, or I can pop you in the mouth again.’

Whenever own goals like this occur I get very angry and it must make Sheldon bubble with delight to know exactly how I feel when crap like this happens. He knows how I can get worked up and rant and rave. I can’t live like this, can we win already?!

Week 3 has probably been a bit of a draw between the two political forces.

Great news to see Maxine McKew in a strong position in Beeninalong. Would it be too much for me to hope that Howard gets ousted from his own electorate? It certainly must put John Howard in two minds and makes it interesting for us election watchers.

One thing I’d love for us to do more on TDV is focus more on marginal seats. I find that always interesting reading no matter where the electorate is in the country. Maybe Sheldon and I can start focusing more on our local electorates of Petrie and Forde.

Labor are certainly a chance of capturing Forde.

I’ve been doing some research to get into the election zone.

I’ve been watching Yes Prime Minister. And it has occurred to me that Sheldon’s personality is really just all the old stale BBC TV shows ever made mixed together and funnelled into his head.

Shell loves the Beeb. He loves those Carry On movies too I bet.

Sheldon reminds me of Sir Humphreys….also reminds me of Mr Humphreys as well.

BRING BACK THE RUBBERY POLITICAL FIGURES!

OK we have had the Save The Worm campaign, but can we start a new campaign and bring these guys back?

I remember these guys with great affection. They were the coolest thing and I think they’d be a smash hit if they brought them back! I struggle to think of anything I would find funnier than a return of these guys.

DONKEY: LATEST MORGAN POLL (NOV 2)

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007
donkey-latest-morgan-poll-nov-2

The latest Morgan Poll is out and Labor has increased its lead, now holding a 15% TTP advantage over the Coalition.

Here is the latest information from the Morgan Poll.

PRIMARY VOTE

Coalition - 39% (Down 0.5%)

Labor - 49% (Up 2 %)

TWO PARTY PREFERRED

Coalition - 42.5 (Down 1.5%)

Labor - 57.5% (Up 1.5%)

Gary Morgan says:

“The increase in the ALP two-party preferred vote is ‘bad news’ for the Coalition.   If the election were held today the ALP would win in a landslide.  This is despite more electors believing the country going in the right direction, now 56% compared with 53.5% a week earlier.

“L-NP voters want the Federal Government to cut taxes, keep interest rates low, and look after the aged.  ALP voters want lower interest rates and more Government investment in health and education, etc, and assistance in such areas as housing affordability for the young, rent assistance.

“As I’ve been saying for months, the election will be much closer as voters finally decide whether they will vote out the Government which has Australia experiencing an economic boom.

“Why will the election be closer?  Simple:

“Electors will vote for which party that will benefit them the most and they will see more benefit to them in tax cuts versus promises or changes in education, health, housing, etc.

“While the ALP must be the favourite to win the election and win many L-NP seats, the gap will close and the number of L-NP seats lost will be fewer than the Morgan Poll shows today.

“But much can happen in three weeks and an interest rate rise next week will reset the agenda again.”
